The Scenario

Ryan Lochte is a famous swimmer who won 12 Olympic medals, including a sixth gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

During the 2016 Olympics, Lochte and three other Olympic swimmers reported that they had been robbed at gunpoint by individuals posing as police officers after a night out in Rio. Details later emerged that the “armed robbers posing as police” were actually security guards at a gas station where the swimmers had urinated outside the bathroom. Lochte was also alleged to have vandalized a framed poster. After being caught by the security guards, the swimmers offered them money. Some of the swimmers were detained in Brazil as witnesses and one paid more than $10,000 to get his passport back. Lochte lost four major corporate sponsors and received a 10-month suspension from USA Swimming and the US Olympic Committee. He was initially charged with filing a false police report, but those charges were dismissed a year later in July 2017.
