TCP/IP Protocols
As you learned in your reading, TCP/IP is a suite of protocols. The Dean text identifies the protocols within the suite and touches on the importance of these. In this discussion:
- Select one of the protocols from this suite and do additional research to learn more about it. Note that you can find a large amount of information on the Internet about the protocols by doing a search on any major search engine.
- In your post, note which protocol you research, and write your analysis of the research. This may include:
- What the protocol is used for and its importance.
- What would occur if the protocol were not working or not available.
- Dependencies the protocol has on other protocols or devices.
- Other important information about the protocol that should be noted.
Post your initial response by Thursday to allow time for your peers to respond. All references must be listed and in APA format.
Response Guidelines
For the person who researched the same protocol:
- What information did your peer find that you did not post?
- How was this information important in understanding the protocol?
- What information did you have that your peer missed? Provide the information to him or her and explain the importance.
For the person who researched a different protocol, imagine you have never heard of the protocol.
- Is your peer’s post enough to explain what it is?
- What questions do you have about the protocol and its importance?
- What parts of your peer’s research was particularly interesting or well explained?

IP Addresses and Domain Names
Your cousin Frank’s small hardware business has grown quite a bit since your last visit. He has decided to change to change the name and become and independent franchise of another popular hardware store. Considered a mid-sized company, Frank moves to a larger location, purchases new equipment, and hires a number of new employees. He asks you to take over as his IT/ network director. You have begun to design the new client/server network and are pondering IP addressing and naming schemes.
Answer the following questions:
- What role does an IP address and a domain name play on a network?
- What are the advantages of using private IP addresses as opposed to public ones?
- How do IP addresses and the DNS work together to enable network communication?
