In Bak’s article “McDonald’s in Seoul: Food Choices, Identity, and Nationalism,” preference of foreign dishes over traditional ones was associated with a loss of cultural identity. In your own experience how has the influence of foreign corporations affected the cultural identity of your nation?

Has there been a large influx of foreign corporations setting up business in your home country? If so, how have said companies impacted the success of their local counterparts? If you are from Canada, have any foreign corporations had any significant impact on local businesses?

Whether it be in Canada or your home country, how have foreign corporations adjusted (if at all) to the tastes of locals? How would you relate the level of adjustment a company needs to make to be successful to the strength of a nation’s cultural identity? (1.e. if a company needs to completely change their product menu just for one country, what does this say about the country itself?)

Generally speaking, how do foreign influences in the form of corporations, art, music, and/or mass media affect a nation’s cultural identity? Whether you are from Canada or from abroad, have you personally felt that foreign influence has affected your connection to your own heritage? How so?
