solution
Frank Schneider, plant superintendent of Central Metalworks Co., had just been informed that a young man named Kirk Bell had been hired from outside the firm for the position of vice president of manufacturing, a job that Schneider very much wanted to have. Bell was in his early thirties and had an undergraduate engineering degree, a master’s degree in business administration, and some previous working experience. Schneider is 50 years old. He has been with the firm for almost 30 years, working his way up from the bottom. Starting as a machine operator, he progressed to the positions of leadman, foreman of various departments, assistant superintendent, and his current job, which he has held for seven years. He has no formal education beyond high school, but he has a well-recognized talent for machines, tools, and anything associated with manufacturing metal parts. He also has an excellent ability to work with people, and he is well liked and respected by the employees. When the president of the company, R. D. Allen, told Schneider who his new boss would be, Schneider replied, “I don’t know whether I can work for a young man 20 years my junior, especially one who never dirtied his hands fixing or running a piece of machinery. What can a fellow like this possibly know about running a manufacturing plant?” A few days later, Allen met with Bell in his office. “Kirk,” said Allen, “I think you may have a serious problem with Frank Schneider. He’s a good man, but his feelings are hurt, and he thinks he’s been demoted. What would you propose to do to win him over?”
