Case on Corporate Strategy
Ventures function in dynamic environments and their boundaries may need to be
expanded into adjacent businesses when their primary business is maturing. In this sense,
corporate strategy comes into play because it explains the choice of the direction for a
firm. When determining the choice of the direction, ventures need to deal with three key
issues; namely, the firm’s overall orientation toward growth, stability, or retrenchment
(directional strategy), the industries or markets in which the firm competes through its
products and business units (portfolio analysis) and, the way management coordinates
activities and transfers resources (parenting strategy).
The assessment – The Case
Upon completion of the lesson – strategy formulation: corporate strategy – you are
required to work on a case that can be fitted on the above context.
You are not required to cover the three key issues detailed above. On the case basis, you
can determine which issue(s) need to be addressed on the document. In groups (ideally
8-9 members) you may progressively develop a case based on a company that expanded
its boundaries when their primary business matured. For instance, Nike invested on golf
apparel despite success in athletic shoes.
The report
• The case should be maximum 8 pages long – including references.
• Structure is not predetermined. You required to develop the case, creatively,
embracing introduction, body and conclusion.

Grandma Pearl was sitting around the dinner table with her entire family on Sunday evening when she announced, “I’m going to leave all of you $10,000 respectively.” The entire family screamed with jubilation, “We accept!” Everyone was elated and jumped and screamed for joy! Her grandson Jake was especially happy and announced to all of his friends at school. Her granddaughter Tiffany was also happy because now she could buy her books for college. Grandma Pearl immediately gave her granddaughter Tiffany the $10,000. Upon checking her retirement and assets statements, Grandma Pearl realized that she’d lost too much money in the stock market and could no longer afford to give any more money. Although she intended to still pay Jake, she reluctantly called a family meeting and recanted her promise to pay the other grandchildren the $10,000. Grandma Pearl took a nap and passed away peacefully in her sleep before she paid Jake his $10,000. Jake asked his attorney whether he could claim against Grandma Pearl’s estate for breach of contract and recover the $10,000.

  • discuss whether Grandma Pearl’s promise was a binding contract. Why or why not?
