CareLess Industries has two divisions. Division 1 makes cleaning products,

and the net worth of this division (PV of cash flows) is 500. Division 2 makes

a chemical product. The net worth of division 2 is 300, absent any potential

liability. However, there is a chance that division 2 could have a 700 liability for

pollution damage. The potential victims have no contractual relationship with

the fi rm. The probability of such a loss is 0.2>(1 + s), where s is the amount

the firm spends on safety. The firm must choose the level of s. If you could sell

off division 2, would you do so? What is the gain from splitting the firm in

this way? Assume a separated division 2 (as a stand-alone firm) is protected by

limited liability. Note also that the derivative of a>(1 + s) with respect to s is

-a>(1 + s)2; that is, [a>(1 + s)]>s = -a>(1 + s)2.

solution

A firm used to have productive assets that generated an income stream with

a present value (PV) of 3,000. However, a fi re occurred, and most of those

assets were destroyed. The remaining undamaged assets produce an income

stream that has a present value of only 1,000. Therefore the fi re has reduced

the value of the firm from 3,000 to 1,000. The firm could reconstruct the

damaged assets for a capital cost of 1,500, which would restore the income stream to its pre-loss level (PV = 3,000). The firm has existing debt of 2,000, which is a senior claim. Would the shareholders choose to reinvest by issuing new equity to pay for the loss, or are they better off walking away from the firm? Would the decision made by the shareholders be in the best interests

of the bondholders? In answering this question, remember that the shareholders have limited liability, and therefore the share value cannot be negative.

Ask 3 people you know what you are good at or what makes you unique. What did they say? What did you learn from their responses?
2) Values + actions that align with those values = credibility
Apply this equation to your life and analyze whether you believe you have strong credibility, some credibility, or are lacking credibility. You may believe you have credibility is some aspects of your life, but are lacking it in other areas. If this is true for you, this is a great realization. It is important you are honest in your analysis because your ability for personal growth depends on your ability to be honest about where you are at right now.
3) Describe what you think your current personal brand is. What do you like and dislike about your current personal brand?
Part B – Develop your Desired Personal Brand
1) How do you want to be remembered? How would you like people to describe you? This is your desired personal brand.
2) On a scale of 1-10, rate how similar your current personal brand is to your desired personal brand (1 – exactly the same, 10 – completely opposite). Explain your rating.
3) Develop a strategy for changing your personal brand or maintaining your personal brand. Discuss a minimum of 5 actions you will take to reach or maintain your desired personal brand.
*** Make sure actions are as specific and practical as possible. If you want to increase your online presence, state the specific steps you will take to do that (e.g., create LinkedIn profile, follow Supply Chain Canada on LinkedIn and Facebook, etc).
Part C – Market and Position your Personal Brand
1) Building a robust network of people is important for marketing your personal brand. There are three main types of people to establish networking relationships with:
1) decision makers; 2) information sources, and; 3) supporters.
For each of these three groups, list 1 specific person you want to establish and/or build relationships with.
The video identifies three methods to build relationships: 1) be a resource; 2) stay in contact, and; 3) always be genuine.
Person
Include name and job title and organization (if applicable)
Type

Strategy for Building Relationship (list methods and brief description; how will you get connected or build a relationship with them?)
2) Your personal brand should be consistent in-person and online. Describe your current online presence.
• Search your name and see what comes up. Are you happy with what you find and does it align with your desired personal brand?
• Which social media platforms do you have a profile on? Are these profiles active and do they align with your desired personal brand?
3) List a minimum of 3 actions you will take this semester to ensure your online presence will contribute to building your desired personal brand. Some examples of actions that you could take are, but not limited to: creating a new profile or deleting content on social media, strengthening profiles, make weekly postings, etc.
*** Make sure actions are as specific and practical as possible. If you want to increase your online presence, state the specific steps you will take to do that (e.g., create LinkedIn profile, follow Supply Chain Canada on LinkedIn and Facebook, etc).
Some important considerations for your online presence include:
• be genuine and showcase your values;
• engage and participate in conversation;
• everything online is public and recorded
• focus on having a presence where your target audience is (i.e., LinkedIn, Instagram, etc)
4) Find a current job posting that you are interested in and develop a cover letter and resume for it, based on the guidelines discussed in class. Submit your cover letter and resume as one separate Word document.
