You are the internationalization team of Behold, a small retailer, and the CEO has asked you to assess the possibility of international expansion to one of three possible countries. Top management has determined that there are considerable opportunities abroad, but has limited knowledge of other countries, and is therefore uncertain if and how these opportunities can be captured. Your firm competes in its home market with discount stores that carry general merchandise (i.e. consumables) and a selection of groceries. An important part of differentiation for your firm is its broad and diverse range of food products that you offer. You have previously conducted one foreign acquisition of a firm just across the border in a country that is culturally and institutionally similar to your home country. One Instance of an interview that went well was a recent one I had given in a company recently. For the job I made sure I read the job description properly and connected the requirements with the skills I had, I did not have retail or customer service experience that is required for this role, but I tied it in with previous job situations I had worked in. Also, I watched a couple of videos on situational interviews on internet and understood what employers are looking for and the ideal answers to give. I then reflected on situations in my previous job and prepared a rough answer to those questions.

On the day of the interview, I arrived well before time and answered the questions quickly as the happened to be the exact same questions I had prepared for. At the end of the interview, I thanked the person conducting the interview and waited for a further update. Also, at the end of the interview I showed my keenness by asking probing questions about the role.

In my past experience in conducting interviews, some dos and donts are dress up appropriately for the interview, be on time as the person interviewing has multiple other tasks. Also be honest as an experienced person can easily make out when the data shared does not add up. It’s a must to be professional and not casual during an interview.

Some ways to impress an interviewer are to show up on time, show knowledge about the role and company that you will be working for. Highlight key achievements and awards received.

Bags of ideas

Like it or loathe it, polythene is one of the key material innovations to come out of the 20th century. It iis the world’s ‘favorite’ plastic measured in terms of consumption – 60 million tones /year find their way into films, plastic bags, packaging, cosmetics and a host of other applications. Discovered by accident by chemists working at ICI in the UK in 1933 the original low density polyethylene product has gone through a classic pattern of incremental and occasional breakthrough innovation – giving rise to new products – like high density PE and film and to process innovations like the Phillips catalysis process which enabled better yields in production.

Do some research on polythene and try and draw a ‘family tree’ of innovations – major breakthroughs and incremental improvements like finding new markets. Try to identify the drivers behind the big shifts – for example the pressure on sustainability which is pushing towards bio-degradable versions of the polymer.
