Cultural Considerations for International Assignments Chapter 3 – Global Issues Issues in international management can be categorized as macro level (e.g., firm or industry level) or micro level (e.g., individual or team level). Macro level concerns may be trade regulations, cost of materials, labor laws in different countries, etc. Micro level concerns are typically centered around cultural differences. On page 63 of the textbook you will find a number of dimensions in which people can be different. You will use these in the scenarios below (i.e., discussions of time zone differences, etc. are not relevant to this assignment). For each of the following scenarios, identify the cultural differences that are relevant when working in a foreign country. Assume that the manager is foreign to the region and the employees are local. These are not just for individuals from the United States working anywhere else. Consider anyone working in a country and culture different from their own. 1) Determining a work schedule for employees at a manufacturing firm. Most people in the USA work every day 9-5, keeping that same routine weekly M-F. China’s labor law allows for only 44 hours a week, while allowing 36 over time hours a month. 2) Creating an incentive system for employee performance. 3) Planning social events for employees during work hours in the work environment. 4) Planning social events for employees outside work hours and the work environment. 5) Communicating ideas and plans from the senior management down to employees. 6) Soliciting input from employees regarding recommended changes to the workplace. 7) Promoting employees into management positions. 8) Acknowledging accomplishments of an individual or team.
