Since the past few years, organizations have been forced to reflect and adapt to various disruptive technologies which have impacted businesses. One of the impact areas is on the Organization Structure. The number and skill-set requirement of individuals to occupy various roles in the Organization has drastically changed over the years with Disruptive Technologies, which has resulted in significant shifts in the Organization Structure. Many organizations are now much flatter and agile compared to yesteryears. Some areas have been rendered redundant and some require much lesser number of individuals now. The reporting structures have also evolved to make it fit the business requirements, and to enable a quicker response time to stakeholder needs. Use of shared services, outsourcing, and Centres of Excellence (CoEs) are common features now in many organizations. Hence, organizations have to decide promptly and ensure they have the appropriate organization design in order to win in the market place. The organization structure has a direct influence on various elements including employee engagement, empowerment, speed of decision making, attrition, cost optimization, minimizing duplication of roles, etc.

In your response, mention the earlier Organization Structure, and why it necessitated a change, in order to be in line with the Disruptive Technologies impacting the Organization i.e. What would have been the issues and challenges, had the Organization decided to continue with the existing Organization Structure even after the advent of the Disruptive Technologies in the Organization?

1. Organization Culture: Impact of Disruptive Technologies on the Organization Culture

Organizational Culture is the collection of values, expectations, and practices that guide and inform the actions of all team members. Think of it as the collection of traits that make your company what it is. A great culture exemplifies positive traits that lead to improved performance, while a dysfunctional company culture brings out qualities that can hinder even the most successful organizations.

Culture is created through consistent and authentic behaviours. You can watch company culture in action when you see how a CEO responds to a crisis, how a team adapts to new customer demands, or how a manager corrects an employee who makes a mistake.

Disruptive Technologies has a significant impact on the culture in an organization. With newer and advanced technologies sweeping across various areas, it compels organizations to revisit and review their cultures and incorporate necessary changes. Culture is also automatically impacted with Disruptive Technologies, as various components such as Speed, Trust, Team-working, etc. take centre stage and employees behaviours need to be suitably modified taking into consideration these priorities.

Setting the cultural agenda necessarily involves hard choices. What is the culture you want to see in the organization is a choice the top management makes, keeping in mind the present circumstances and future goals.
