Amazon is creating a new service that allows packages to be delivered by drones. The drones would only be available to Prime customers that are within 10 miles of their warehouses and for items 10 lbs or less and packages 12”x12”x12” or smaller.

Here’s how the service would work:

• A customer would place items in their basket on the Amazon website

• On the checkout page, the drone delivery option would be available only if all the criteria are met

  • Customer is a Prime member

  • Customer lives 10 miles from a warehouse

  • Item is 10 lbs or less

  • Package will be 12”x12”x12” or smaller

• If all the criteria are met, the customer can choose drone delivery or regular delivery

• The customer will then checkout and purchase the items

• If the customer selects drone delivery, the order goes to a special drone department where someone gets the package and drone ready. Otherwise, the order is fulfilled and goes to Fedex.

• At the drone department, the drone is programmed with the customer’s address and dispatched to deliver the package

• The package is then delivered by the drone
